Estate and Planned Giving Strategies
Donors have the opportunity to support Outfest and accomplish any number of financial planning objectives without having to give up crucial assets during their lifetime. We understand these important decisions are unique to every individual and household so we offer options that allow donors to make a larger philanthropic impact than they may have otherwise thought possible. These gifts can provide significant tax benefits to your spouse/partner, estate, or beneficiaries. As with all gift planning, please consult your tax advisor and lawyer to determine what planned gift strategy is best for your current tax situation and income requirements.
Here are some of the strategies you can use to support Outfest:
Wills & Bequests
A will is the foundation of most estate plans, whether you are wealthy or not. You can designate your gift as either a percentage or fixed amount. Outfest can be added to an existing will by revising and re-executing your will or by executing a codicil (a separate amendment). Four popular bequests in wills are:
- A general gift leaves a gift of a stated sum of money in your will or living trust, typically in the form of personal property or assets.
- A specific gift leaves a specific dollar amount or stated fraction of your estate or specified items (collections, art, books, jewelry, etc.).
- A residual gift leaves the remainder of your estate after other bequests, debts, and taxes have been fulfilled.
- A contingent gift leaves a stated share of your estate only if a spouse/partner, family member, or other beneficiary does not survive you.
Please use the following official bequest language to include Outfest in your will:
“I, [name], of [city, state, zip], hereby give and bequeath [cash amount, percentage amount, or property you are giving] to Outfest, Los Angeles, CA, 501(c)(3) Tax ID number: 95-4089601 for its unrestricted use and general purpose.”
Retirement Assets & Beneficiary Designations
Retirement assets may be the easiest and simplest way to leave a legacy gift to Outfest because it doesn’t require a will or lawyer to execute it. Simply name Outfest as the beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of the entire balance or a percentage of your retirement plan.
Here are some of the assets that transfer by beneficiary designation:
- IRAs, 401ks, and other qualified plans
- Social Security benefits
- Life insurance policies
- Certificates of deposit
- Bank accounts
- Donor advised fund residuals
To name Outfest as a beneficiary, request a beneficiary designation form from your policy holder or financial institution and complete it is follows:
3470 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 935
Los Angeles, CA 90010
Tax ID number: 95-4089601 [enter this for beneficiary’s social security #,
employer identification # (EIN), or taxpayer identification #]
Please remember to check once a year with your financial institution to confirm that your beneficiaries are accurate and up-to-date.
Memorial and Honorary Gifts
If you have a family member or friend whose life has been touched by Outfest, consider making a gift in their honor as a living and lasting tribute.
Outfest welcomes gifts of real estate either outright or through any of the Estate and Planned Giving options. You can make a gift of your residence, business, vacation home, or farm to obtain a substantial tax deduction, while retaining the right for you and your spouse/partner to live there during your lifetimes.
