Come take part in an up-close and personal encounter with the recipient of OUTFEST 2001's Achievement Award. Pioneering producer Christine Vachon will share insights into her remarkable career with someone who's closely observed that career from the beginning: John Cooper, Associate Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival and former Director of Programming for OUTFEST. More than any other producer, Vachon has managed to get queer images into mass distribution. In the process, she has launched the careers of numerous star directors. How was this even possible? What are the lessons for other independents? Join us for an invigorating discussion that will tease out the answers to these and other questions, and review the highlights of an unparalleled career. Clips from Vachon's roster of classics, as well as some glimpses of work yet to come, round out this rare opportunity to engage with one of queer film's most vital leaders.

OUR LADY OF THE ASSASSINS:
SPECIAL SCREENING AND DISCUSSION
DIR: Barbet Schroeder, 2000, Colombia/France, 35mm, subtitled, 98 min.
OUTFEST is proud to present this special screening event: the Los Angeles premiere of a unique and daring new film by Barbet Schroeder, one of today's most exciting filmmakers. The screening will be followed by an onstage conversation with the director, featuring a very special guest moderator.
The Academy Award-nominated director of BARFLY, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE returns to his international roots with this brilliant feature, set in his childhood homeland of Colombia. Filmed under extremely dangerous conditions, the film is a portrait of a country seared by violence, and of the souls there who still yearn to soar, even amid hails of crossfire. Fernando, an acclaimed but world-weary writer, returns home to Medellin, nexus of international cocaine cartels. Before long, he falls for Alexis - a street kid who lives by the gun, assassinating anyone who threatens or annoys him. The two men - of different backgrounds, generations, and worldviews - share a tender, sexual relationship, although frequently punctuated by gunfire. As their love deepens, so does their peril. Shocking, and certain to incite controversy, Schroeder's penetrating human study rises above genre conventions, providing an ennobling portrait of human beings in abject circumstances who seek a higher truth.
