Panels & Seminars THE PRIME TIME CLOSET: Free Seminar

As filled as contemporary television may be with lesbian and gay images, queer TV was not an overnight invention. Media historian Stephen Tropiano leads us on a rich and entertaining voyage through history in this special presentation, featuring glimpses at a wide array of rare archival images and an in-depth analysis of their queer content. Focusing on TV genres such as medical shows, law-and-order dramas and situation comedies, Tropiano maps out the complex functions and underlying messages of shows that have been defining queer people - for better or worse- for four decades. Come celebrate and interrogate TV's powerful role in lesbian and gay history in this thoughtful and provocative presentation. In collaboration with: international museum of gay and lesbian history

QUEER TV TODAY: Free Seminar

It's easy to take for granted the wealth of lesbian and gay images on contemporary television, but worth remembering that not long ago, we thralled to "first kisses" and flimsly plotlines involving underwritten queer characters. But have we moved beyond marginalization? Is the current moment an indication of things to come, or merely an aberration? This panel will examine the forces at play in this period when gay characters and programs are an almost expected part of TV fare. Join a spirited discussion featuring prominent television executives and creative personnel including: writer Jonathan Tolins (TWILIGHT OF THE GOLDS; Showtime's QUEER AS FOLK) and pending availability, producer Alan Poul (FURTHER TALES OF THE CITY).
